How Three Librarians Tackled ECF

Three law librarians, three different firms. Each automated thousands of hours of rote work, ensuring case teams receive real-time access to critical federal court filings.

The Problem

Day-to-day case management within a firm requires coordinated teamwork between attorneys, docketing staff, and paralegals, among others. To perform their unique roles, each team member needs real-time access to PDF copies of court filings.

To access these filings, case teams rely on “Notices of Electronic Filing” (NEFs) issued by the Courts. NEFs arrive in attorney inboxes immediately after a filing or another court action is entered onto the docket.

While timely, NEFs have a drawback that is a stumbling block for users: they notify teams of activity, but they do not provide the actual filing.

Instead, NEFs contain a hyperlink that sends users through a series of steps on the PACER site -- a distracting detour that costs firms thousands of hours of lost time annually.

Librarians Find Help in PacerPro

For these three librarians, the solution to these lost hours was PacerPro.

By adding a unique PacerPro email to attorneys’ ECF profiles, PacerPro removes the detour. It automatically downloads, labels and distributes court filings to all attorneys and members of the case team, in real-time, with no clicks or detours required.
The benefit of PacerPro is everybody's on the same page. Even if they're located in different offices, they're getting the notices of the filings immediately. So that was a big thing, especially with some of this litigation being really high stakes. The attorneys don’t want to find out later that one of their colleagues was on top of something they didn’t know about

Easy for Librarians to Pilot

The three librarians found it easy to set up a pilot of PacerPro. They identify participants with active litigation, PacerPro sets up the accounts on the backend, and pilot users begin receiving PDF2Go.
We used Research Monitor to identify a list of our heaviest PACER users. Once we got a few cases added through ECF, we saw immediate interest from the attorneys, who wanted to have additional matters added. From there, we went to our CFO with the value proposition and decided to move forward.

Our bankruptcy group was the most vocal about wanting to receive PDF2Go. First, we got a couple of good cases working - then they wanted all their cases set up like that.

Enterprise Deployment = Instant Payoff

Enterprise Deployment = Instant Payoff

The answer is simple:

  • Rapid ROI. PacerPro’s Enterprise Deployment Plan can get your firm fully set-up within two weeks, rapidly eliminating manual downloads.

  • Data-driven intelligence. PacerPro enables firms to passively capture a comprehensive library of firm filings, with all associated metadata, laying the foundation for a data-driven future.

We were able to set PacerPro up in a relatively short period of time. I can't tell you that it's not time consuming - it is - but the payoff is so instantaneous that it makes the work rewarding.

Collaboration and communication power the best firms. But breaking down silos can be a challenge. Librarians say PacerPro helps build bridges across internal teams.
When you're able to see the workflow of other departments, you're able to see that you have products that can solve some of the problems that the attorneys are dealing with. For example, a couple of days ago, we had an attorney who wanted to get a bankruptcy case from PacerPro. As it turned out, that case wasn't available through PacerPro - but we did have another product that was suitable. So being in the loop meant we were able to make sure the lawyer got the right product at the right time.

A really great side effect of rolling out PacerPro was that the library was communicating a lot with a number of different departments that we don't ordinarily talk to and really showing them a benefit to their work. For example, with docketing – we have a relationship now, and we’ve called on that goodwill for subsequent projects that have come across our desk.
